In this first photo Ryan is 2 months old and his favourite mode of play was on his back with toys hanging down in front that he could hit with his hands. At first the hitting was accidental, but Ryan would get so excited by the toys moving that he would wave his arms around and hit them again! It didn't take long for the movements to become more purposeful. At this age Ryan would have daily 'tummytime' but he really didn't like it much and wouldn't last for any longer than 5 minutes.
When Ryan was 2.5 months I started taking him to a play group called 'Bouncing Beans' - it was so much fun, for him and me! We learned some rhymes, danced, sang and played with different kinds of toys - mostly things that were visually or kinesthetically stimulating.
At around 3.5 to 4 months Ryan started to enjoy being on his tummy a lot more and it wasn't long before he was trying to reach for things. We had this tube I would put him in and by 5.5 months (though this pic was taken a bit later) Ryan had started to try and reach for things outside the tube.
By 6 months Ryan was starting to sit, he was still a bit tipsy so I surrounded him with pillows so he wouldn't bang his head when he would fall over. We started to notice that Ryan would be content to play on his own for much longer now that he could sit up.
From sitting to standing, friends gave us this bouncer and Ryan just loved it. He would be nearing 7 months in this picture and was starting to enjoy trying to stand so this new play device was perfect to get him standing and bouncing. Now, at 8 months of age Ryan is starting to get into things. He gets around right quick with his commando-style crawl (no hands and knees yet). His favourite things to find are cords. He just started to go from laying to sitting on his own and he absolutely LOVES to try and pull himself up to a standing position (as seen in the 'what's in the box?' post).

What is this "tummy time"? Another girl I know mentioned it recently in an email about her little boy and now seeing it again (in the same day in fact!) I'm curious about the origin of this concept. My mom never told me anything about "tummy time". Then again she never told me about a lot of things I'm finding out about having babies....good thing I have friends to educate me! :)
Adorable pictures!!!

'Tummytime' is having your baby spend some time on his/her tummy everyday. Since it is now recommended that babies sleep on their backs there was concern that they weren't getting enough time on their tummies which helps them to gain neck control and various good things for their developement.
